It recognizes specific oligosaccharide structures on glycoproteins and glycolipids and is involved in various biological phenomena including cell growth, apoptosis, adhesion and angiogenesis. Galectin-3 plays an important role ii carcinoma development, aggressiveness and metastasis. Galectin-3 is overexpressed in certain neoplasms and its high expression levels are associated with a shorter survival, the occurrence of metastasis or a reduced response to chemotherapy in patients with different types of malignancy, such as colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer and lung cancer. In certain neoplasms, Galectin-3 may be a valuable diagnostic marker and target of malignancy treatment.
